Weekend Concert Calendar, 9/25/08

It's a pretty good weekend for choral music! Happy fall!

Friday:

The BSO, with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, presents the Brahms Requiem. Christine Schäfer, soprano and Michael Volle, baritone solo with James Levine conducting. At Symphony Hall (did I need to tell you that?) at 8:00 pm, both Friday and Saturday.

OperaHub presents an original cabaret called "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Opera." This will be Friday at 8 pm at Christ Church Cambridge, Zero Garden Street in Harvard Square, and also on Sunday at 2:30 pm at Brookline Public Library’s Hunneman Hall, 361 Washington Street in Brookline. And OperaHub announces that "In the spirit of accessible opera for all, tickets to this performance are FREE!" Thanks, OperaHub!

Saturday:

The Orpheus Singers sings at 8 pm at Lindsey Chapel at Emmanuel Church, 15 Newbury St. in Boston. They are presenting "Choral Polyphony: Guillaume Dufay to Elliott Carter, settings from the 15th to 20th centuries of poems, psalms, and prayers." This is the group that Jim Olesen conducts, that same Jim Olesen that I interviewed recently.

Sunday:

Exsultemus
sings music of Buxtehude at First Lutheran Church in Boston, 299 Berkeley St., a few blocks from the Boston Common. The concert is at 5:30 pm. Exsultemus is fantastic, so get your behind out to this concert!

Also on Sunday, I found something interesting. The Schiller Institute is presenting a concert called "To Save Beautiful Singing" (is it endangered?) where the Schiller Institute Chorus will present Italian art songs and Bach's motet Jesu, Meine Freude. Their ad says, "Presented as the culmination of the 10-day master class held by soprano, Antonella Banaudi and in support of the Schiller Institute’s campaign to return to the performance of music at the natural pitch of A-432 Hz." Hm. Well, it's free, anyways. 3 pm at Dante Alighieri Center, 41 Hampshire St. in Cambridge.

I'll be attending two of the above concerts. Can you guess which ones?
